Meet Wild Thang, an 8-year-old Pekingese who recently won first place in the 2024 World’s Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, California. The annual competition, held during the Sonoma-Marin Fair, featured eight contestants, most of whom were rescued from shelters and are now living in loving homes.
Wild Tan is a familiar face, having competed in the contest five times. He came close to winning three times, coming in second place, but this year he finally achieved his dream of winning the title. Originally from Los Angeles, Wild Tan now lives in North Bend, Oregon, and is enjoying his retirement.

His unique appearance comes from battling canine distemper when he was just 10 weeks old – the disease affected his teeth development, caused his tongue to protrude and also left him with a muscle disorder in one of his legs.
Now in its 50th year, the World’s Ugliest Dog competition celebrates the special qualities that make each dog unique. Rather than making fun of a dog’s appearance, the aim is to celebrate their individuality and show the world that every dog has their own unique beauty, regardless of their appearance.
The event’s website emphasises the importance of embracing dogs’ imperfections and highlighting their charm and individuality – it’s a heart-warming festival where these wonderful pets can shine and bring joy to all who attend.
