MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University is hosting a girls-only summer day camp this week with a focus on technology and robotics programming. Camp Infinity is a week-long session that introduces girls in grades 5-8 to the world of computer programming and internet technology through hands-on activities. This year, Camp Infinity will be held at 10 universities across Michigan, and it’s the first time it’s been held at UP. Camp Director Christina King said the girls-only approach allows for deeper learning.
“Sometimes boys are more interested than girls, so it gives girls a chance to really take control of the field. They can really take ownership of what they’re doing, which is a huge advantage for them,” King said.
Camp Infinity is organized by the Michigan Council of Women in Technology, which has the goal of increasing the number of women in technology, and organizer Katina Krauter says Michigan is poised to be a leader in the field.
“We want to make Michigan the No. 1 state in technology, and we’re going to do that by offering programs and inspiring girls to get into the field,” Krauter said.
The coming week will feature a panel discussion with local women in tech, followed by a presentation of their work on Friday.
