Fiji is the latest country to come forward to host its first circus show.
Featuring an all-Fijian cast, the show combines circus spectacle with the storytelling power of dance.
This experience combines comedy, theatre, dance and thrilling circus acts to bring to life a unique and magical story: The Story of Fijian Flying Circus.
RNZ Pacific spoke to VOU Dance Company director Sachiko Solo, who said there was plenty for audiences to see.
“We have acrobats and we also have my steel, which is a very high pole that they work on.”
“There are women dangling from their hair, there are aerial silks, there are magicians and jugglers.”
“Of course, in Fijian fashion we have some really funny clowns as well as dancing, so there’s a lot to look forward to,” she said.
The performers have been training for over a year with the help of a Cuban coach.
Solo said five circus trainers had come from Havana, two of whom were coaches at the National Circus School in Khyber Islands.
“VOU Dance Company has been training Fijian dancers in various specialist skills for over a year,” she said.
“I’m really proud of all of the artists. They’ve taken their training and blended it with their own cultural narratives, and the results are just, really beautiful.”
“We can’t wait to show this to the Fijian community,” Solo added.
The show will run in Nadi from June 26th to July 6th.
International tour dates have yet to be announced.
