Wellness on Wheels is a partnership between Hormel Laboratories and Mower County Public Health to provide free preventive health screenings to rural communities in Mower County on alternating months of the month. Grants from the Austin Area Foundation and Mower Freeborn Cooperative support the effort.
“For many people, it’s hard to find the time or money to go to the doctor when they’re sick, much less make time for preventive screening. NIH estimates that only 8 percent of U.S. adults get regular preventive screening,” says Emily Heath, clinical research and outreach lead. “We want to remove as many barriers as possible for people to get these important screenings.”
The public is encouraged to take advantage of these free services and provide feedback on what resources they would like to see provided to the community at future events.
“We believe everyone should have access to these services to stay on top of their health and prevent future illnesses. This is just the beginning and we will continue to grow and add more resources. As we grow and learn the needs of our community, we hope to add more services and opportunities for people to access them,” Heath said.
Wellness on Wheels comes to Adams on July 23. For the latest information on Wellness on Wheels dates and locations, visit hi.umn.edu/community-events .
