Driven by the demand for more advanced chips, Europe’s semiconductor industry is making great strides in funding, infrastructure and workforce development efforts. From the European Chip Act, which funds workforce development programs, to EUROPRACTICE, which provides affordable resources to academia and industry, providing engineering staff with the skills they need to develop new integrated circuits (ICs) is crucial.
Imec, a world-leading research and innovation center in nanoelectronics and digital markets, removes barriers to accessing cutting-edge semiconductor design technologies for academia and industry. Over the years, Synopsys has collaborated with imec on a number of industry-transforming developments, including 3D IC technology and Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD).
To enable the integrated circuit design platform, imec has contributed to the chip ecosystem by distributing process design kits (PDKs), which model the manufacturing process of the design tools used and enable the design of integrated circuits using specific technology variants of the foundry process.
Like a set of building blocks, the PDK will help more academics and designers learn how to create advanced node chips, educating the future workforce in Europe and around the world, positively impacting a range of industries including consumer electronics, automotive, healthcare and artificial intelligence.
