In an exciting move that’s sure to shed some light on the fast-food industry, McDonald’s has partnered with Philips MyCreation to overhaul the lighting in its restaurants around the world. The goal? To create a more engaging dining experience while cutting down on pollution, according to some interesting engineering.
The fast-food giant aims to install custom 3D-printed lighting fixtures in all 38,000 of its restaurants worldwide: the circular pendants are embossed to create a shimmering velvet effect, enhancing the ambience of the restaurants.
But the real beauty lies in sustainability: By 3D printing the lampshades from recyclable materials near each restaurant, McDonald’s significantly reduces delivery-related pollution and energy costs. The made-to-order process also reduces waste compared to traditional manufacturing methods.
This is a major step towards the company’s ambitious goal of significantly reducing pollution by 2050. By embracing innovative solutions like 3D printing, McDonald’s is on track to provide a cleaner, more environmentally friendly dining experience to millions of customers.
“After seeing the second sample, we never thought this would be possible because it was so close to the original design intent,” Mark Pochardt, McDonald’s senior director of global design integration, told VoxelMatters.
The company plans to roll out this new lighting concept to its restaurants around the world: “In 2023, we want to have Philips’ MyCreation lighting solution in McDonald’s restaurants in more than 100 countries around the world,” Pochardt said. “From Argentina to Japan. From Alaska to Australia.”
