With developments like the doubling of internet use in low- and middle-income countries and breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, technological advances over the past decade have strengthened hope that technology can improve the world. New innovations are bringing life-changing health services, knowledge, and economic opportunity to even the most remote and marginalized communities. But rapid change comes with new risks, and the gap between the digital haves and have-nots is widening. Across the world, authoritarian regimes are equipping themselves with powerful tools to surveil, manipulate, and even attack people around the world.
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) invite you to USAID’s first-ever digital policy launch event, “Digital Development: Harnessing Technology’s Potential for a Better World.” The event will present a 10-year roadmap for responsible digital technology adoption, democratic values, strengthening information integrity, and accelerating digital development. USAID’s 19th Administrator, Administrator Samantha Power, will deliver a keynote address and discuss why technology is the most defining force shaping global development today. She will also outline the choices we can make now to minimize risks and maximize technology’s potential to improve people’s lives. After the address, Administrator Power will join Carnegie Chairman Mariano Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar for a fireside chat.
