New road scanning technology provided by Shi International will help analyze and repair Macon’s roads.
MACON, Ga. — Traveling to different locations in Bibb County can be a daunting task.
Justen Scordrith knows: He works at a car dealership and has seen the damage done to cars all over Macon, including his own.
“It’s terrible around here. I have to get my truck aligned every six months,” Skouris said.
According to the county’s standards, roads rated a level 5 are worn with cracks, potholes and a level 1 means smooth travel.
“People complain about it all the time,” Scordrith said. “I work at a car dealership, and people who come in for alignments always tell me they’ve hit a pothole. They’ve got holes in their wheels, so it’s pretty bad.”
The county’s next road resurfacing project will cost more than $243,000.
Mayor Lester Miller proposed recruiting new companies to provide road scanning technology to aid the county’s efforts to repair dangerous roads.
The technology, provided by Shi International, will analyze road quality and rescan Macon-Bibb’s priority list to see what still needs fixing.
Macon-Bibb is repairing roads in phases, Miller said, with the estimated cost of paving each road being $400,000.
“They have a very good reputation,” Miller said. “I recommend them because their prices are reasonable, but they do quality work, which is something we ask for. The previous company did a good job when we used these roads, but this time they’ll be a little more specific to our needs, so we’re excited about that.”
If approved, Miller said he plans to move forward with the deal with Shi International, with execution expected to begin next quarter.
