An internet-enabled LoC platform allows for remote control of fluidics experimentsWe developed an internet-enabled open-loop LoC platform, detailed in Fig. 1. In this platform, the LoC system, combining sample preparation and optical detection, was located within an optical setup at the University of California Santa Cruz. In this setup, an optical fiber carrying 488 nm excitation light was aligned to the solid-core excitation waveguide. Fifteen pneumatic lines connected an electronics box (Automaton) to the LoC, enabling remote pneumatic actuation and thus fluid manipulation and sample preparation.Figure 1Internet enabled lab-on-a-chip platform. The glomerulus, the basic filtration unit of the kidney, is a complex network of capillaries. Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that control the movement of ions, water, and metabolites while remaining impermeable to essential macromolecules such as proteins. The selectively permeable capillary wall is known as the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) and is made up of three main components: glomerular endothelial cells (GEnCs), glomerular basement membrane, and podocytes. GEnCs line the inner surface of the capillary wall and are covered with a thin layer of glycoproteins and other carbohydrate-based moieties. Adhesion G protein-coupled receptor F5 (ADGRF5), a transmembrane cell receptor…

Microbial degradation of biological material is a process essential for life on Earth.Earth. Some genetic studies haveThey break down plant matter, but surprisingly little is known about the decomposition of vertebrates such as humans. That was until a recent study by scientists at Colorado State University (CSU) identified a network of microbes that appears to “universally” promote the breakdown of animal flesh, regardless of environmental variables.A research team led by Dr. Jessica Metcalf, associate professor in the Department of Animal Sciences, tracked the decay of 36 human corpses at three body donor sites: the University of Tennessee, Sam Houston State University,…
