Fernando Alonso has responded to reports that Aston Martin is stepping up efforts to recruit Adrian Newey for the 2025 F1 season following his departure from Red Bull.
Red Bull announced in May that Newey would leave the company at the start of 2025 and the team would cease development of its F1 car for the remainder of the season, with immediate effect, to focus on its hypercar project.
Sky Sports News understands that Newey has already been approached by Ferrari, who stated last month that the team was his first choice.
However, Newey has made a secret visit to the Aston Martin factory to consider his options, with four teams – Aston Martin, Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes – thought to be in the running to sign him.
Fernando Alonso remained tight-lipped when asked about the possibility of Adrian Newey joining Aston Martin.
“I have read the rumours and the news but they are coming from the same sources and websites,” said Alonso, who signed a new contract earlier this year to keep him at Aston Martin until the end of 2026.
“One week ago [reports said] He was at Ferrari, so rumors are rumors.”
When asked what he would say to Newey to get him to join the team, Alonso replied: “That’s between me and him.”
Last month, Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur responded to rumours that Adrian Newey would join Ferrari next season.
Why is Newey joining Aston Martin?
Aston Martin has fallen out of the running at the top since the middle of last year and is currently fifth in the constructors’ championship after nine rounds.
Honda will supply Aston Martin with power units from 2026, when the first season of new technical regulations begins, and Alonso has previously declared the team has the best project for the future.
The Silverstone-based team opened a new factory last year, complete with a new wind tunnel, underlining its ambitions to succeed in F1.
Ted Kravitz speaks about Adrian Newey’s ‘genius’ following news of his departure from Red Bull
Aston Martin has signed Dan Fallows from Red Bull for 2022. Fallows was a key player in Sebastian Vettel’s four consecutive titles between 2010 and 2013, and Newey will reunite with Fallows if he moves to Aston Martin.
Signing with Aston Martin would see Newey remain in the UK, but joining Ferrari would mean moving to Italy, which may be another consideration for the 65-year-old Newey.
“I think everybody in this paddock wants Adrian Newey,” said Stroll.
“I hear a lot of things, mainly from you guys. [the media]Last week I heard he was going to Ferrari, but now he’s coming to our team. Next week he’s going to Williams.
“He’s a legend in the sport and has more wins than anyone in this paddock.”
Speaking of what Aston Martin can offer Newey, he added: “It’s a very exciting factory. It’s a young team but it’s a very exciting project.”
Ahead of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, we take a look back at some of the most dramatic moments from previous races at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Chandhok: Newey considering options
Karun Chandhok, Sky Sports F1:
“At the end of the day, the only person who knows what he’s going to do is Adrian Newey. When it was announced he was leaving Red Bull, I wholeheartedly believed him when he said he didn’t know what he’ll do next but that he’s not done with F1. I agree because he’s an incredibly competitive guy.”
“I think he is really considering his options. There is a romantic side to Ferrari, wanting to see Newey, Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari together. But Aston Martin might be the place for him to go because it’s based in the UK and he’s worked there for most of his career since coming back from the US in the 1980s.”
