IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization committed to technological advancement for humanity, has released its Technology Megatrends report for 2024. The report provides an in-depth analysis of the top three megatrends – Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), Digital Transformation and Sustainability – and assesses their impact on humanity through technology advancements, maturity, time to adoption and actual market deployment.
“The Megatrends report provides an in-depth look at long-term trends that will impact various aspects of humanity, providing our team with opportunities to create inspiring ideas and previously unexplored applications. We look forward to incorporating the insights we gain from this report into our next innovation cycle.”
“With technology being such an integral part of our daily lives, these predictions are critical for all stakeholders,” said Dejan Milojicic, IEEE Fellow and member of the IEEE Future Directions Committee (FDC), and HPE Fellow and VP of Hewlett Packard Labs.
“Technology megatrends are deeply intertwined with economic, environmental and social megatrends and need to be taken into account in a holistic analysis to ensure societal benefits.”
Summary from the IEEE 2024 Technology Megatrends Report:
Artificial general intelligence will continue to grow at an accelerated rate as it assists humans in their work and demands ever-increasing energy sources. Sustainability of new data centers with innovative energy sources will complement workloads migrating across geographical boundaries, decarbonizing and increasing water consumption. Digital transformation will focus on technologies that can or have the potential to be automated at scale, adopting AR/VR to complement ensemble technologies.
With the emergence of these technology megatrends, industry leaders must prepare for inevitable changes in their workforce needs, including AI programming to provide IT support, monitoring sustainability while optimizing multiple goals, and managing operations through automation with human oversight.
Megatrends typically evolve over 20 years or more and drive developments in multiple areas of global importance.
The report identifies specific recommendations for industry, governments, academic institutions, professional organizations, investors, executives, developers and end users, including promoting early regulation of technologies that may raise concerns and recognizing the importance of establishing processes and practices to address misinformation.
The report also highlights the importance of investment in sustainably advancing the application of artificial intelligence, and highlights the need for education on the technology as it becomes more deeply embedded in society.
The IEEE 2024 Technology Megatrends Report was developed by a diverse team of 54 global technology experts bringing perspectives from the Middle East, Australia, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States, and bringing together IEEE’s broad expertise across more than 47 technology disciplines.
