The BMW Start-Up Garage will be working with Munich-based DeepDrive to test an innovative electric motor with dual-rotor technology. This innovative concept promises an extremely efficient, powerful drive and a long range. Following the success of the pilot project, the BMW Group and DeepDrive will then integrate the new drive into a BMW Group model and carry out the first field tests.
Key highlights:
Dual rotor technology: Integrates two electric motors into one compact unit High torque density: Ensures energy efficiency and powerful performance Versatile application: Suitable for both in-wheel and centralized drive systems Early success: DeepDrive prototypes exceeded BMW’s specifications Scalability: Has the potential to appeal to a wide range of vehicle models Collaboration: DeepDrive is also partnering with key suppliers such as Continental.
DeepDrive’s innovative electric motor design is groundbreaking, featuring a stator that simultaneously drives both the inner and outer rotors. This results in a compact, energy-efficient unit with high torque density. The lightweight design enables either an in-wheel drive system with each wheel hub having its own motor, or a traditional centralized drive system powered by a central motor block.
BMW recognised DeepDrive’s potential early on and has been intensifying cooperation since IAA 2021. “The DeepDrive prototype parts have significantly exceeded our specifications,” said Karol Wilsick, Head of Vehicle Concepts and Technology Research at the BMW Group. Such a level of maturity and performance is rare for such a new technology.
After proving the concept on a test rig, BMW and DeepDrive are now moving to real-world validation. In-wheel motors are expected to be more space-saving, energy-efficient, lightweight and cost-effective. “DeepDrive has developed an exciting vision for the electric drives of the future,” Virsik added. The Startup Garage will enable BMW to research and refine these next-generation drives.
In 2024, the DeepDrive motor concept won the German Innovation Award. Co-founder and co-CEO Felix Pohnbacher emphasized the importance of the partnership with BMW: “The collaboration with BMW gave us a foothold very early on, helping us navigate the complex corporate world and meet and exceed the rigorous standards of the automotive industry. Our goal now is to integrate it into a series-production model.”
The BMW Startup Garage operates as a venture client, bringing startups’ innovative technologies to the BMW Group. Since its launch in 2015, it has connected BMW with numerous startups to drive innovation, sustainability and operational performance. “The BMW Startup Garage is a great opportunity to connect with startups, and we will continue to work with the best startups,” said Virsik. Startups provide BMW with the unconventional thinking and fresh perspectives that are essential for pioneering advancements in the automotive industry.
