The U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) recently announced $19.5 million to the South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub, spearheaded by Miami-Dade County under the leadership of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, to accelerate technology and innovation-driven growth in the region by increasing manufacturing, commercialization and deployment capacity for key climate technologies.
“South Florida’s Tech Hub designation highlights our city’s global leadership in addressing climate change. This investment by the Biden-Harris Administration will position our city to meet the climate crisis head-on, drive economic innovation and create quality jobs in South Florida,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levin Cava. “Miami-Dade County is proud to collaborate with the public sector, academic institutions and private partners from Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach counties on this groundbreaking effort.”
The ClimateReady Tech Hub is one of 31 tech hubs designated by EDA in October 2023, selected from nearly 200 applicants across the country; fewer than half received implementation funding for Phase 2. This significant federal investment will galvanize climate innovation from public, private, academic, tribal and community partners, positioning South Florida as a leader in adaptation and mitigation technologies to withstand extreme weather, increased flooding and rising temperatures.
The EDA highlighted South Florida’s application as “demonstrating leadership and potential to leverage the region’s assets, talent and technical expertise to become a world-class, globally competitive innovation center.”
“This funding marks a pivotal moment for South Florida,” said Francesca de Quesada Covey, regional innovation director for the ClimateReady Tech Hub and chief innovation and economic development officer for Miami-Dade County.
“Not only are Climate Ready Tech Hubs the only certified hubs focused on finding solutions to pressing climate problems, but they also bring economic benefits of jobs and increased GDP to all communities, from Palm Beach to Monroe County and bordering the Miccosukee Nation to the west,” de Quesada-Covey added.
The ClimateReady Tech Hub aims to address the climate crisis by developing, commercializing and scaling technologies focused on climate adaptation and mitigation. Initial projects include advancements in clean concrete, coastal defense systems and next-generation HVAC solutions.
This first phase is projected to create 23,000 new high-paying jobs over the next five years. Once fully operational, the Tech Hub is expected to generate $41 billion in new revenue over the next decade and position South Florida as a global hub in the $1.3 trillion market for sustainable and resilient infrastructure.
This project has bipartisan support from members of Congress representing Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties, including Congressman Frederica Wilson, Congressman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Congressman Carlos Gimenez, Congressman Maria Elvira Salazar, Congressman Jared Moskowitz, Congressman Sheila Charfilas McCormick, Congressman Lois Frankel, Congressman Byron Donald and Congressman Maxwell Frost, who all support the project. Senator Marco Rubio also supports the project.
The ClimateReady Tech Hub is a consortium of local governments, businesses, universities, and organizations originally convened by the South Florida Regional Planning Council, with technical assistance support from the Kenneth C. Griffin, Citadel, and Knight Foundations. These organizations collectively represent the region’s four counties and are combining diverse expertise, resources, and perspectives to build a world-leading climate tech ecosystem.
