All sorts of complications could emerge in the coming days as six teams compete for four bonus spots in the Euro 2024 knockout stages, but the equation for Scotland and Hungary is simple: win or go home. Scotland earned their first points of the tournament with a 1-1 draw with Switzerland in the second round, putting them ahead of Hungary, who lost by two points to both Switzerland and leaders Germany.
Hungary is looking to reach the knockout stage for the second time in the last three Euros, but having lost both of their previous matches by two goals, they’ll not only need to win, but win well. No team has failed to reach the knockout stage with four points in the group stage in the two 24-team tournaments. A win would be enough for Scotland. Here’s how to watch the game and what you need to know.

Germany and Switzerland are probably already guaranteed the top two spots, with the Swiss needing a heavy defeat to create the big swing in goal difference needed for Scotland to move into second place.
Team news
SCOTLAND: With Ryan Porteous receiving a red card in the 5-1 defeat to Germany, the last thing Scotland needed was for their defensive numbers to worsen. That’s exactly what happened on Monday night, when Kieran Tierney suffered a serious hamstring injury that will rule him out not only for the rest of the Euros but also the opening game of next season. Tierney is a vital player for Arsenal’s national team and his link-up with Andrew Robertson is the reason Steve Clarke opts for a back three. Scott McKenna, who was on the bench against Switzerland, is expected to play in his place, but Tierney’s absence will be sorely felt.
Scotland predicted squad: Gunn, Hendry, Hanley, McKenna, Ralston, McGregor, Gilmour, Robertson, McTominay, McGinn, Adams.
Hungary: A strange dilemma awaits coach Marco Rossi. Judging by the results of their last two games, Hungary may need to be refreshed, but their loss to Germany was a more competitive side overall than their loss to Switzerland. With no known health issues, Hungary may be up for another go.
Hungarian alternate XI: Gulacsi; Fiola, Orbán, Dardai; Bora, A. Nagy, Schäfer, Kerkes; Szalay, Szoboszlai, B. Varga.
prediction
Scotland’s defensive injury problems may be too much for Clarke to adjust to, but a narrow win would have Hungary sweating for the next few days. Prediction: Scotland 1, Hungary 2
