As anticipation grows for Osgood Perkins’ Long Legs, with word of mouth spreading about how dark, brooding, and terrifying the Nicolas Cage-starring feature film is, attention is beginning to gravitate toward his next project, the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey.

The filmmaker’s adaptation of King’s short horror stories featured in Skeleton Crew is set to be his next feature film. It stars Theo James (White Lotus), Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk: The Attorney at Large) and Elijah Wood (Maniac). In an interview with Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew, Perkins previewed what to expect, which is, of course, unexpected: “It’s a story that’s like Misery, Creepshow, Gremlins and [An American Werewolf in London]”It’s nothing like ‘Long Legs.’ I think if you’re making a movie about toy monkeys, you can do it seriously. But a lot of King’s work has a goofy, nostalgic feel to it. So I tried to make a movie that had a bit of a late ’80s, ’90s feel. It’s like Robert Zemeckis took a bit of LSD and made a Stephen King movie about toy monkeys.”
The director has teamed up with Neon (who also have Long Legs in theaters) and James Wan’s Atomic Monster for a boundary-pushing horror primer of sorts. “For me, it’s a movie that, ideally, kids and their parents would want to go see together,” Perkins continued. “People explode, people explode. It’s very over-the-top, but it’s very funny. It’s a father-son redemption, very moving, very nostalgic, very Stephen King.”
“The Monkey” will be released in theaters on February 21, 2025. “Long Legs” will be released on July 12.
