The Denver Broncos added a prominent figure to their front office on Thursday when general manager George Paton announced that former Stanford head coach David Shaw had been hired as senior personnel executive. This marks Shaw’s first return to the NFL since 2005.
Shaw actually interviewed for the Broncos’ vacant head coaching position in 2023 before Denver ultimately acquired Sean Payton in a trade. Payton and Shaw both served as offensive assistants with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997 and reportedly stayed in contact last year.
The former Stanford head coach spent 12 years at his alma mater, compiling a 96-54 record before stepping down in November 2022. Shaw won three Pac 12 championships and was named Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year in 2017. He left as the program’s winningest head coach, with 25 more wins than his legendary Pop Warner teammate.
Shaw was an assistant with the Eagles and Oakland Raiders in the late 1990s before being promoted to quarterbacks coach with the Raiders in 2001 and then served as quarterbacks/wide receivers coach with the Baltimore Ravens for four seasons until 2005.
Shaw clearly had aspirations of returning to the pros — he interviewed for head coaching positions with the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers this offseason — but is now in the front office.
